Security directorate of the western Libyan city of Misurata is investigating a security official suspected of torturing a prisoner to death, a security source told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"The prison officer of the Anti-Crime Department, Milad Swe'i, was relieved of duties by the prison administration and is now under investigation for possible involvement in torturing an inmate to death. A new prison officer will be assigned," the source said.

"According to the law, exemption and referral to investigation is a routine procedure that has nothing to do with any pressure from any party," the source explained.

Local sources in Misurata told Xinhua that the prisoner Ahmad Bakir, a senior leader of a Libyan armed extremist coalition, "died on Monday in prison after suffering a severe epileptic seizure."

Misurata's Anti-Crime Department was accused by Islamist parties in Libya of torturing and killing Bakir, who was arrested in August in Misurata.

Misurata's Municipal Council condemned "any violations of human rights and torture, and all extrajudicial killings."

The council demanded the Attorney-General to "investigate into prison violations and all crimes against Libyans," a statement said on Monday.

"We call upon security institutions to commit to professionalism, develop its performance, and enhance the efficiency of its personnel and control their practices," the statement said.
