Eight Taliban militants were killed after Afghan army personnel launched a cordon and search operation in the country's northern province of Sari Pul, an army source said on Thursday.

"Some five militants were also injured during the clashes in the raid which was launched in surrounding areas of Sayyad district Wednesday.

But no civilian or army soldier were hurt during the operation," a press officer of army's Corps 209 Shaheen based in the region told Xinhua.

The security forces also confiscated 11 motorcycles following the operation in the province, 350 km north of Afghan capital Kabul, the source added.

The mountainous province has been the scene of heavy clashes between Taliban and security forces over the past couple of months.

Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants recently, as spring and summer known as fighting season, are drawing near in the Central Asian country.
