Shanghai General Motors (GM) has started recalling 6,451 GL8 minivans in China due to problems with the vehicles' electronic steering software, the country's top quality watchdog announced Friday.

The recall, starting on Friday, involves the 2017 Buick GL8 produced between June 6 and December 6, 2016, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in a statement on its website.

Due to a problem with the electronic steering support calibration software, the system could report a fault code leading to the system to fail under some extreme circumstances, according to the statement.

Shanghai GM, a joint venture between US automaker General Motors and SAIC Motor of China, will upgrade the software to eliminate potential safety hazards, said the statement.

Shanghai GM said it will inform vehicle owners of the recall via registered mail. Its after sale service center will also contact customers for checks and repairs of the software free of charge.
