Islamic State claims deadly Kabul University attack

The Islamic State group has claimed Monday's deadly Kabul University attack which killed at least 19 students and injured 22 others, AFP reports.

The attack happened at around 11:10 a.m. local time on Monday. After detonating an explosive device at the eastern gate of the university, the militants entered the compound and started firing.

The second blast rocked the university's northern gate at around 3:20 p.m. local time amid gunshots and rescue operations to take out all those trapped in the crossfire.

Afghan security forces were supported by US troops in dealing with the attack.

The country's President Ashraf Ghani vowed to take revenge for the attack.

"We will take revenge for this senseless attack and for any drop of innocent students' blood spilled today," AFP quotes Ghani to have said.

"This attack will not remain without response, we will retaliate."
