People of Hong Kong should undo the knots in their minds and unite with mainlanders to chase their great China dream.
Hong Kong has been back joined with the motherland for a whole 17 years. The region has seen the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" framework, under which the Hong Kong people govern the city and live the life they want to live.
In recent years, the glittering "east pearl" has realized lasting social and political stability and economic development. It has been honored as one of the world's freest economic entities. Progress has also been made in various sectors and its exchange and cooperation with the mainland have become increasingly close.
But shadows always coexist with the sunlight. Some deep-rooted problems have amassed and negative elements have bred and multiplied along with the change of Hong Kong's economic and social environment. As a result, friction and conflicts surface from time to time.
Some Hong Kong citizens participated in the "Occupy Central" movement to oppose social inequity and other issues. Some locals call mainlanders "locusts" and call for them to be prevented from entering. Others even express nostalgia for the colonial era and agitate for violence.
But tolerance and diversity are among the core values cherished by the Hong Kong people. Through the years, various ethnic groups, new and old immigrants in Hong Kong, have got along well with each other and united together to create an economic miracle. They also make Hong Kong a global city full of the human touch.
But the emerging impatience, confrontation and violence have made visitors uneasy. Local people's mocking and rejection of simplified Chinese characters and mandarin, and their scolding to different opinions are really distressing.
The core values also include rule of law, freedom and democracy, which are all safeguarded by the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Since the city's return in 1997, the law has formulated its system and policies and ensured local rights and freedom. Any expression of opinion should be under the regulation of the law and can not damage the normal social order.
Activities challenging the basic law and instigating confrontation and conflict in different classes have not only destroyed the legal foundation for the city's prosperity and stability but damaged social harmony and disturbed citizens' normal life.
Meanwhile, a healthy and mature democratic system is one where both the few and the majority are respected. Nobody is allowed to ride his or her opinions on those of others.
The existence of problems is unsurprising during society's development. But we should all recognize that prosperity and stability don't come easy and should be cherished.
The central and Hong Kong authorities are all trying to settle the new problems. Hong Kong citizens should also be calm and all walks of life should be patient and sincere in order to resolve the issues.
The mainland and Hong Kong also need to strengthen communication and coordination, listen to and respect different voices.
