The director of the upcoming Thor sequel Ragnarok has posted a cryptic image of actress Natalie Portman on social media.
Taika Waititi, the New Zealander in charge of the God of Thunder's new instalment, left fans scratching their heads over the weekend by posting two photos of Portman with the caption: "Heed the signs. Ragnarok."
The actress played Dr Jane Foster in the two previous Thor movies, but has said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal last year she was "done" with the franchise.
"As far as I know I'm done," she said.
"I mean I don't know if maybe one day they'll ask for an avengers 7 or whatever I have no idea, but as far as I know I'm done. It was a great thing to be a part of."
The picture posted by Waititi shows a young Natalie Portman in the Luc Besson film Leon: The Professional, carrying a plant and groceries.
The photo is edited side to side with a current photo of Portman, pictured pregnant of her latest child, while also carrying plants and groceries.

"What does it mean?" one fan asked on Twitter.
"Is he suggesting a last minute cameo by Natalie Portman?" asked another.
Granted, the post is too cryptic to even suggest something, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its post-credit scenes, Easter eggs and short cameos.
Portman's character was a fan favourite and many have complained over her poorly justified absence throughout the Avengers movies.
If the actress does return to the MCU, it is unlikely she will remain a mere love interest for Thor.

In the comics, Jane Foster at a point obtains Thor's powers and the ability to handle his mythic hammer Mjolnir.
Some fans also wondered if the fact that the actress is holding a plant in both pictures could somehow be related to the Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 character Baby Groot, who is a small talking tree.
While others simply stated it was an homage to Leon, as the plant symbolises the death of Jean Reno's iconic character.
But if so, why would the director add "Ragnarok" at the end?
Thor: Ragnarok opens in the UK on 27 October.
