Aung San Suu Kyi pledges to work for political prisoners' release

Newly-appointed Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi said on Thursday that she will work for the release of political prisoners on the occasion of the upcoming Myanmar new year through legal channels.

In her announcement of the State Counselor's Office, Aung San Suu Kyi said the matter of seeking release of political prisoners, political activists and students facing charge is one of the prioritized tasks of the elected people's government.

She promised to either seek president's amnesty order or the permission of judicial courts for the release of such category of prisoners.

Aung San Suu Kyi, who is Foreign Minister cum Minister of the President's Office, has also become the country's State Counselor in accordance with the State Counselor Law, passed by both Houses and signed by President U Htin Kyaw Wednesday.
