South Korea is planning to set up a new training center in Myanmar to help improve the capacity of local seafarers, official media reported Tuesday.

The opening of the international-level training center is prompted by the recent discussion between Myanmar and S. Korea on bilateral cooperation in maritime education, said the Global New Light of Myanmar.

There are about 3,000 local maritime officers, and 60 percent of them have worked on international shipping lines including those of South Korea.

The remaining ship engineers are working for Japanese factories and Myanmar-Vietnam shipyards.
