MANILA – Prominent non-government organizations composed of Filipino and Chinese leaders handed over some 2,000 face masks to the Intramuros Administration to give out free to local and foreign tourists at the historic and cultural sites in Intramuros, an old Spanish enclave.
Among the choice sports frequented by local and foreign tourists are the Bahay Tsinoy, a museum which accounts for the Chinese in Philippine life. It’s founder, civic leader Teresita Ang-See said this is a way to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Face masks were turned over to the Manila City Hall officials led by Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Dumagoso while 2,000 other masks were given out to employees and staff of the Manila City Hall including traffic officers.
The Filipino Chinese Amity Club led by its president Bobb Tai Kuo, turned over 10,000 face masks to Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran under its President Michael Chen Guzman to help distribute to tourist spots in Intramuros.
Meanwhile, Dr. Henry Lim Bon Liong, president of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII), called on the people to remain calm and heed advisories from government health authorities.
He likewise appealed to the community not to join “some misinformed people” in their unfair and anti-China racist stereotypes and xenophobic attacks. He referred to China as an important Asian neighbor and the country’s traditional ally and longstanding trade partner for over a thousand years.
“We should give moral support and encouragement to China in their valiant efforts to contain this ailment,” he said in a statement released to the media late Saturday. He credited China for their “remarkable political will” and immense sacrifice in imposing a lockdown on Wuhan City and its neighbors involving millions of people.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Marfori Andanar said the Philippines is working with other countries, their health agencies and with international health organizations to contain the virus from spreading.
“Preventing the outbreak of the 2019-nCOV is not something we can do alone,” he said as he cautioned the people not to panic.
“Let us not resort to panic, sow fear or spread misinformation. Solidarity, empathy, and cooperation are what we need to successfully take actions that will overcome this health concern,” Andanao concluded his statement.
