The situation in Ukraine was the main topic of discussion between German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Thursday evening, according to local press.

After their meeting, Sikorski said that the EU-Ukraine association agreement should stay on the table.

Sikorski confirmed that "Ukraine is still EU's important partner and neighbour ... the offer of signing the negotiated deal should remain on the table," he said. "It is up to Ukraine to decide whether it would like to take this opportunity."

Steinmeier said, "We regret that Ukraine has decided to suspend signing the association deal with the EU. We are very much interested in preventing an escalation of the situation in Ukraine." He also felt that Ukraine was closing the door to crucial reforms, but he stressed that "We are ready to help if there is such a wish."

This visit was part of Frank-Walter Steinmeier's first tour as Germany's Foreign Minister and also included a meeting with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.
