Nigerian army arrests 6 suspected pirates after attack kills soldiers

The Nigerian troops in the oil-rich Niger Delta region said they have arrested six suspected pirates who killed four soldiers and a policeman in an attack on a military base.

The troops staged a raid on the armed group's camp in Degema area, and captured the four male and two female suspects, army spokesman Isa Ado, said in a statement on Monday.

Large quantities of arms and live ammunition were recovered from the camp, Ado said, noting that the army was chasing other fleeing suspects.

Suspected pirates attacked an army base at Nembe area in southern Bayelsa state on Friday night, the state police have confirmed.

Piracy and armed robbery in Nigeria's waterways have increasd in recent years, drawing international attention. Enditem
