Eight policemen including an officer were injured when a bomb went off near a police convoy in Pakistan's northwest Dera Ismail Khan district on Tuesday afternoon, local media reported.

Express TV said that the police convoy came under attack when cops were on their way back to police station after performing duties at a religious procession held to celebrate Prophet's birthday.

Police said that the Senior House Officer who was leading the convoy also got injured in the blast carried out by a remote controlled device.

The explosive materials that were fixed on the road side by some unknown militants also left two police mobiles completely destroyed.

The injured people have been shifted to a nearby hospital where four of them are said to be in critical condition.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

The explosion happened at about 12:30 p.m. (local time) in Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan, a main district in the country' s northwest Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province.

The incident happened despite strict security measures taken by provincial and central governments to avoid any untoward situation in the processions that are being held across the country to celebrate Muslim Prophet's birthday.
