SuuKyiobtainedabachelor'sdegreefromtheUniversityofOxfordin1969,andin1972,shemarriedMichaelAris,ascholarinBhutanesestudies.
HtinKyaw,aschoolfriendandconfidantofthedemocracychampion,succeedsformergeneralTheinSein,whousheredinreformsthattransformedMyanmarfromarepressivehermitstatetoanationfullofhope.
AsHtinKyawtooktheoathofoffice,hehintedhewouldchangethearmy-imposedconstitutionthathasexcludedhisfriendandmentorfromthetoppost.
