APD | Cambodia to export 100 tons of bananas to China

PHNOM PENH, May 16 (APD) - Cambodia announced on Thursday to begin the first time of 100 tonnes yellow bananas export to the Chinese market very soon this year.

The export of bananas shipments is the diversification of Cambodia’s agricultural products to the giant economy in the region, China after milled rice, cassava, and rubber.

According to the ministry of agriculture, only five companies are given permissions to export banana to China are Longmate Agriculture, Long Sreng Hua Jian Agriculture Development, Green Island Agriculture Development, Sovann Reachsey, and Grand Land Agriculture Development.

Veng Sakhon, Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said Cambodian yellow banana is having high potential in the international market and Cambodia is now ready to gradually export onwards.

“Allowing bananas shipments this time which is among other agri-products to China will significantly contribute agriculture sector development, especially the country economic growth as a whole,” he said, adding that the export of the bananas to the international market will present 20 percent in the country economic growth annually.

A pact on a protocol of phytosanitary requirements signed between Cambodia and China last year August, paving the way for the yellow bananas shipment from Cambodia to China.

According to Mr. Khon, about 130,000 tonnes of bananas are expected to supply in China market by the end of this year. As of April this year, about 38,000 tonnes of bananas were exported to the international market, and the banana yields will reach one million tonnes by 2030.
