Nepal reports 24 new COVID-19 cases, largest single day spike

Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population on Monday reported 24 new cases of COVID-19, the largest single day spike, bringing the total number of cases to 134.

The Himalayan country has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent days. It reported a single day spike of 17 cases on May 6. On Monday, Nepal reported 11 new cases in the morning and additional 13 new cases in the evening, Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population said.

According to the ministry, the 24 new cases involved 23 men and an 11-year-old girl.

Samir Kumar Adhikari, joint spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population told Xinhua that all of them tested positive when they were in compulsory quarantine.

"Most of them had come from neighboring India and were in quarantine while some of them were put in quarantine during movement within the country," he said.

Nepal has so far reported no death from COVID-19 cases. As many as 33 infected persons have recovered, the Health Ministry said.

As the number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise, the Nepali government on May 6 decided to extend the ongoing lockdown till May 18 and continue the suspension of international flights till May 31.
