Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population on Wednesday reported 17 new cases of the COVID-19 disease, the largest single day spike, bringing the total number of cases to 99.

The Himalayan country has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent days as it had earlier reported a single day spike of 16 cases on Sunday.

At a regular press meet on Wednesday, Bikas Devkota, spokesperson at the Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population, said samples of 17 persons aged between two months old to 66 years old were tested positive for the virus. "Among them, 10 samples belonged to men and seven belonged to women," he said.

According to him, swab samples of all 17 persons, all residents from southern districts, were tested positive at Kathmandu-based National Public Health Laboratory.

Nepal also saw the recurrence of the COVID-19 on three persons for the first time. According to Devkota, a 58-year-old man who was discharged from hospital after recovery on April 23 was also found to be infected with a virus in retest.

As the number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise, the Nepali government on Wednesday decided to extend the ongoing lockdown till May 18 and continue suspension of international flights on the country's sky till May 31.
