UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Thursday condemned a recent terrorist attack in Iran's Saravan which killed over a dozen Iranian border guards, his spokesperson said.
Ban condemned the attack and extended his condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Iranian people and government, UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said here at a regular briefing when asked about the incident.
Ban also noted with serious concern the reported hanging of 16 people following the attack, Nesirky added.
According to Iranian media, 17 Iranian border guards were killed in an armed clash on Friday near Saravan city bordering Pakistan, in the Sistan and Baluchestan province. No details have been revealed about the identity of the perpetrators.
On Saturday, Iranian authorities hanged 16 prisoners, who are " rebels" of an unspecified armed group, in revenge for the attack.
