Built by the 30 most talented sand sculptors in the world under the guidance of Dutch artist Wilfred Steiger, the pyramidal castle with wooden buildings around stands at 21.16 meters, 3.5 meters taller than the last Guinness World Record set at 17.66 meters in Germany, 2019. /CFP

According to Wilfred Stijger, the sculpture represents the power of the coronavirus over the world since the beginning of the pandemic and atop the sandcastle is a model of the virus wearing a crown. /CFP

The intricately decorated structure is said to be made up of 4,860 tonnes of sand, with around 10 percent clay added to make it more cohesive. A layer of glue was applied after completion to help the sculpture withstand chilly and windy conditions during autumn and winter. /CFP
