World War II veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore, famous for raising millions of pounds for the National Health Service during the UK's first lockdown, has been admitted to hospital with coronavirus, his daughter said.

Hannah Ingram-Moore said her father, who had been getting treatment for pneumonia, had tested positive for COVID-19 last week and was rushed to hospital on Sunday for help with his breathing.

"He was at home with us until today, when he needed additional help with breathing," she said in a statement on her father's official Twitter account.

Moore, who is 100 years old, however, is not in intensive care.

"The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible."

"We understand that everyone will be wishing him well. We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to."

Several people from all walks of life, including politicians, and took to social media to voice their support for Moore.

"The whole nation hopes you get well soon @captaintommoore. You've been an inspiration to us all throughout this crisis," Labour leader Keir Starmer said.

"Thank you to our brilliant NHS for taking care of @CaptainTomMoore. Hoping for a speedy recovery and to see Captain Tom back home with his family soon," Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said.

Mooreraised more than £32 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden prior to his centennial birthday.
