Young people are being warned to be cautious by the World Health Organization as they emerge as the main drivers of COVID-19 infections.

Studies from the WHO show that the rate of infection among younger members of the public has risen from 4.5 percent in February to 15 percent more recently, following the easing of lockdowns across Europe.

Health officials are urging countries to exercise caution - stressing the importance of the timely reopening of schools.

Hans Klug, WHO Regional Director for Europe, emphasized that there is still a risk for youngsters.

"Low risk of the virus does not mean no risk - and young people are at the forefront of the COVID-19 response," he told CGTN.

On reopening schools, Mr Klug said that this should be done by closely monitoring the risk factor locally.

"The key issue is a risk-management approach, a good assessment of what is happening in the community, to localise it, and to contain it quickly and locally as many countries in the European region," he added.
