The Israeli military said its troops exchanged fire with gunmen along the border with the Egyptian Sinai on Wednesday afternoon in an apparent drug smuggling operation in the region.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said the soldiers were on patrol near Nitzana, a western Negev community adjacent to the border, when shots were fired in their direction. There were no injuries among them.

The Israelis returned fire, though it was not immediately clear if they hit anything.

An initial investigation of the incident suggested that an attempt to smuggle drugs across the border had likely been foiled, Israel's Walla! news portal quoted an unidentified military source as saying.

In a similar incident last month, two Israeli soldiers from an infantry battalion permanently deployed along the Egyptian border, one of them a female officer, sustained light-to-moderate injuries in an exchange with drug smugglers armed with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles who fired at the Israeli force from three directions, including from a moving vehicle.

Three to five smugglers were reported to have been killed in that incident. Enditem
