Egypt is looking forward to cooperating with Russia to get rid of terrorism, said Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Russia and Egypt are continuing their strategic 2+2 meetings. In Cairo, Shoukry and Defence Minister Sedky Sobhy have welcomed their Russian counterparts -- giving a military dimension to the diplomatic coordination on regional issues. Fighting terrorism is one of the most pressing issues up for discussion.

Mahrouky said that the meetings reaffirm the strong ties between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin - and are likely to reassure Moscow in the wake of the US's warmer approach to Egypt.

The 2+2 meetings began in 2013 when Egypt began to deepen its relations with Russia. This is the third time the country's top diplomats have met.
