Singapore reported 17 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, the highest one-day increase, bringing the total to 243, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Monday.

Of the 17 new cases, 11 are imported ones and four are linked to previous ones while two are unlinked.

MOH said four more patients have been discharged, so there are now a total of 109 who have fully recovered.

The 134 still in hospital are mostly stable and improving, but 13 remain in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) announced on Monday it accepts MOH's recommendation to extend the closure of mosques for another nine days until March 26, completing one incubation period to break the cycle of transmission.

On March 13, Muis stated that all mosques in Singapore will be closed for at least five days, and all activities suspended for 14 days, following the discovery of individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a large religious gathering in Malaysia.

Subsequent contact tracing revealed that the five infected individuals frequented at least 10 mosques during their infectious period. Muis has shared the list of the 10 affected mosques on March 14 and advised members of the public who may have visited those mosques to monitor their health.
