Under the system of "one country, two systems", businesses have flourished and people have enjoyed a steady living environment since the handover of Hong Kong. This has given international investors confidence in Hong Kong. Mr. Gui Xiong Li, Vice-Chairman of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of various trade associations, was interviewed by the Asia Pacific Daily, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's reunification with China.
According to Li, the success of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong has attracted worldwide attention. Hong Kong's competitiveness comes from the advantages of the "one country, two systems" system, including the rule of law and judicial independence, free flow of capital, freedom of investment and trade, low taxes, a favorable economic environment and an efficient government.
Gui Xiong Li said, "The Party and the Country have always been concerned about Hong Kong, care for Hong Kong, and supported Hong Kong." As a solid backing for the SAR's development, the central Government of China has been supporting Hong Kong in dealing with numerous challenges and resolving various major risks since Hong Kong's return to the motherland. The "Pearl of the Orient" has become more stunning after the storm with the strong support from the Central Government. The Central Government made numerous of efforts in order to develop and improve the democratic system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). They are aimed to brought "one country, two systems" becoming permanent, and enabling all Hong Kong residents to well exercise their democratic rights, which Hong Kong will be more prosperous.
With the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area recently, the interaction between the three places on both sides has become more frequent. According to Gui Xiong Li, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has provided various opportunities for Hong Kong and Macau. Hong Kong and Macau have unique advantage in many aspects. Therefore, they should take this opportunity to actively exert their strengths.
Gui Xiong Li pointed out that Hong Kong is an international financial center, trade center and shipping center. Macau is an international leisure and tourism center. Hence, Hong Kong and Macau can lead the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in terms of internationalization. Not only to promote the Greater Bay Area (GBA) in aspects of rules and systems by taking advantage of the legal system and international aspects, but also attract global scientific and technological resources with their strengths in scientific research to lead the development of the GBA in these field.
Gui Xiong Li stated that, Hong Kong's position as an international financial center comes from the close connection with China's economic development in the past decades, while the positive expectation of China's economy will continue to provide stronger support for Hong Kong's situation. Facing the complex international situation and the COVID-19 epidemic, China's effective epidemic prevention measures have provided a favorable environment for a rapid economic and production recovery. The rapid improvement of international trade reflects the trust of other countries from the world to China's supply chain. China's huge market will have further recognizable effects on the global economy and production activities, along with the dual circulation development pattern. Global multinational companies will be more interested in participating in China's development in a more outgoing market environment. Hong Kong's infrastructure, human resources, and well-established regulatory system provide a great platform for global enterprises to develop in China.
As an overseas Chinese businessman, Gui Xiong Li said that, Thailand has been cooperating closely with Hong Kong in recent years, and the trade volume has been rising constantly. Numerous of Hong Kong enterprises have been investing and developing in Thailand to expand the market. Overseas Hong Kong-Chinese in Thailand love their country and birthplace. They are enthusiastic about public welfare as well as charity, and they built a bridge for the friendly cooperation and economical trade exchanges between Thailand and Hong Kong. In the future, they will continue to carry forward the fine traditions of the Chinese nation, unite and assist their compatriots, love and help each other, and take a greater sense of responsibility to make the cooperation between the two places in different fields to a higher level.
Ultimately, Gui Xiong Li suggested that the motherland is always the strong support of Hong Kong, whether in the past, present, or future. Chinese businessmen all over the world are confident about the future development of the Hong Kong SAR, especially the unique position of Hong Kong in international economic, trade and financial cooperation. A world-oriented better Hong Kong will certainly be presented to the world with the characteristics of free and democratic, Sound legal system, open and tolerant, Harmony and stability, and full of love to the motherland.
