"Iron Man 3" rakes in 400 mln U.S. dollars in North America

"Iron Man 3" has grossed 400 million U.S. dollars worth of tickets in North America since it debuted more than six weeks ago, distributor Walt Disney Pictures announced on Wednesday.

The third installment on the iconic trilogy crossed the important threshold Tuesday, and is on track to gross 1.2 billion dollars from the global market. This has made the flick 5th highest grossing film of all time.

The film, which is directed by "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" helmsman Shane Black, stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle.

The Marvel actioner kicked off the summer box office when it hit theaters May 3.
