UN political chief Jeffrey Feltman appreciated Iran's statement that it is committed to facilitate a political solution to end the Syrian crisis, a UN spokesperson said Tuesday.

The UN under secretary-general for political affairs stressed UN's rejection of a military approach to the Syrian crisis during his two-day visit to Iran which ended Tuesday, said Farhan Haq, associate spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at a regular news briefing.

"Feltman shared the United Nations' position that Iran, given its influence and leadership in the region, has an important role to play and a responsibility in helping to bring the Syrian parties to the negotiating table on the basis of the Geneva communique," said Haq.

Feltman discussed with Iranian officials on the situation of Syria, "including the UN's grave concerns about the potential use of chemical weapons" and how the UN can work together with Iran and other countries to end the bloodshed and suffering of the Syrian people as soon as possible, Haq said.

On Monday, Iran "strongly" warned against any foreign military strike against Syria as momentum was building for such a response to alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government against civilians.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi on Tuesday reiterated that no authorization by the UN Security Council has been issued for military intervention in Syria.

"Our region is in a very sensitive situation and it needs tranquillity more than ever. Therefore, political solutions are required for the problems," he said.

Iran is a main ally of the Syrian government in the region and has backed the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah group to fight on the side of governmental forces against Syrian rebels, which Tehran considers as "terrorist groups."
