European Union leaders will meet in the coming days to discuss Ukraine's application to join the bloc, the President of the European Council Charles Michel said in a tweet on Monday.
"The EU stands firmly by Ukraine's side in efforts to alleviate humanitarian suffering inflicted by Russia's aggression and ensure nuclear safety," he said.
"The EU's solidarity, friendship and unprecedented assistance for Ukraine are unwavering. We will discuss Ukraine's membership application in coming days," he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week he had signed an official request for Ukraine to join the EU.
Zelenskyy asked the bloc to allow his country to gain membership immediately under a special procedure.
The application came just days after Russia launched its military operation in the Eastern European country.
