At least 22 policemen and 45 militants were killed after Taliban attacked police checkpoints in Maywand district of Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar overnight, provincial police spokesman said Tuesday.

"Taliban militants launched wide offensives on 15 security posts in Jagrum, Qala-e-Shahmir, Khak-e-Chopan and surrounding areas in Maywand district, western of provincial capital Kandahar city, on Monday night and the clashes lasted until early Tuesday, leaving up the casualties," spokesman Zia Durrani told Xinhua.

About 15 policemen and 35 militants were also wounded during the overnight and predawn fighting, Durrani added.

Taliban has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The Taliban militants, who ruled the country before being ousted in late 2001, renewed armed insurgency, killing government troops as well as civilians.

Security situation has been improving in Kandahar, the former stronghold of Taliban, over the last months, as security forces have conducted search and cordon operations across the province. But the militants attack government interests in the province from time to time.

On Oct. 19, 43 Afghan army soldiers were killed, nine injured and six others went missing after Taliban attacked an army camp in the same district and the clashes on that day also left 10 militants dead.
