Brazilian President Michel Temer is under pressure to step down after protests against him across the country on Sunday.

Opposition groups, who have long pointed to corruption in Temer’s administration, were emboldened by the Supreme Court opening an investigation into allegations he endorsed the payment of hush money to a jailed former lawmaker.

Protesting metal worker Fatima Dos Santos said, “We are now actually beginning a moment that will remove Temer from power. We need to gather more strength and then we'll have acts as big as the ones we had in defense of ousted president Dilma Rousseff.”

Rallies were called by trade unions and activist movements who want an end to Temer's government and a halt to his economic reforms.

Temer now faces a struggle to retain the support in parliament that political analysts say is keeping him in power.
