Haiti is keeping a close eye on two tropical waves in the Caribbean Basin after heavy rains killed three people last week, the National Meteorological Center (CNM) said Tuesday.

One of the low-pressure systems is over the country's westernmost region, while the second is east of nearby Puerto Rico.

The CNM said surrounding elements indicated the tropical waves would not develop into a more severe weather event, but warned they could bring rains and storms to certain parts of the country. Five of Haiti's 10 departments were most susceptible to the effects of the tropical waves.

Last week, a tropical wave dumped heavy rains in northern Haiti, killing three people and causing damage to infrastructure.

Some 100,000 Haitians, left homeless by a devastating earthquake in 2010, still live in makeshift tents and are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events. Last year, an unusually heavy rainy season left at least 18 people dead and caused substantial material damage to the country.
