Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan on Sunday officially opened the 11th Singapore Maritime Week, which is focused on the theme of "Positioning for Future Growth".

Organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), this year's Singapore Maritime Week returns with 31 events, and 16 of which are new. Close to 30,000 public participants and high- level delegates representing port authorities, CEOs, industry leaders, and maritime experts worldwide are expected to attend these events.

As maritime industry is facing headwinds due to the softening global economy, oversupply of capacity and depressed freight rates, MPA aims to address the many ways Singapore can maintain its competitive advantage on a global scale.

"Given the uncertain market outlook, Singapore Maritime Week 2016 will be about sharpening competitiveness in the industry by addressing the economic challenges and identifying unexplored areas for growth," said Andrew Tan, Chief Executive of MPA.

"By creating awareness, building interest in the sector and enhancing understanding vis-a-vis our line-up of events, we hope to foster a stronger, more cohesive maritime community that will weather the headwinds and be well-positioned for growth opportunities that are inevitable when the tide turns." Tan added.

At the opening ceremony, Minister Khaw together with industry and union representatives, unveiled the new Maritime Singapore logo as part of an initiative to raise greater awareness about the industry and to promote and profile maritime careers.

During this year's events, students and the public can experience "MPA Learning Journeys" that include a port tour to Jurong Port and a sea tour to the Raffles Lighthouse. They can also visit the exhibition named "Memoirs of City Port Scenes", which presents Singapore's city port scenes with 54 pieces of works.

In the coming days, maritime experts will gather to discuss critical issues and offer their expert opinion on the future of the industry in various forums, seminars and roundtables.

As the industry demands new maritime technologies, companies are required to keep up in order to maintain their competitive edge. Platforms like "Maritime Sustainability forum" and "SMI Seminar 2016: Smart Ships" will explore potential Research and Development opportunities and technologies for the next generation of ports and ships.

While "Maritime Cyber Security Seminar" will facilitate information sharing on strategies and solutions to be adopted to mitigate cyber security risks in the maritime ecosystem.
