HBO's Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" finished as the big winner at the 65th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award held here Sunday night, taking home a total of eight awards.
In the meantime, veteran actor Bob Newhart stole the limelight as he received his first Emmy in half a century of his career, which came for his guest role on CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory."
As Steven Soderbergh's directorial project which stars Michael Douglas in the lead role and Matt Damon as his real-life lover, "Behind the Candelabra" took home art direction, casting, picture editing, costumes and other major awards after leading the pack with nine nominations.
Trailing the television film dealing with pianist Liberace's relationship with his lover is Tony Awards and "Boardwalk Empire." Each had four.
"Saturday Night Live," "Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Croissant de Triomphe" and the documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God" won three apiece.
Newhart, 84, was recognized for his portrayal of Professor Proton, the host of the favorite childhood TV show of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) on "The Big Bang Theory."
Until walking away with the honor at Sunday's ceremony held at the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, Newhart has been nominated for the Emmys on six occasions which first came nearly 51 years ago.
The night also saw other winners: Melissa Leo for the sitcom "Louie,"Dan Bucatinsky for "Scandal" and Carrie Preston for "The Good Wife." The two are drama series.
June Foray received the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Governors Award for lending the voices for such cartoon characters as Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Cindy Lou Who in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
Networks wise, HBO led the pack with 20 awards as one of the perennial winners at the event. CBS trailed with 15 and NBC got eight.
Seventy-seven out of a total of 101 honors were handed out in honor of key technical disciplines and behind-the-scenes crafts including casting, picture editing, costuming, hairstyling, makeup, lighting and sound.
The 65th Creative Arts Emmys will be broadcast on the FOX Network on Saturday.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be staged the following nights and will be telecast live on CBS. The remainder of the awards, including top acting and show categories, will be handed out.
