NEW DELHI, June 10 (APD) - The External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj recently said that India is “constantly monitoring the situation in Qatar.”

It has become important for New Delhi to keep track of the developments in Qatar as about 6.5 million Indians are currently living and working in Qatar. The situation is tense in the Middle Eastern country as it is dealing with diplomatic boycott by four Arab countries, namely— Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain.

The four countries have also blocked air, sea and land connections with Qatar, which is adversely affecting the people working and living there. The four countries have suspended flights to and from Qatar and they have not only called back their own ambassadors but also asked diplomats from Qatar to leave. This crisis is being understood as the worst diplomatic predicament in the Arab world in recent years and further instability is predicted in the region.

The Indian minister assured that India was carefully following the developments in Qatar when the issue was brought to her attention via a social networking website, twitter. A person had sent a message to the minister saying, “My brother and other Indians are stuck in Qatar with storage of basic enmities, and they need our government’s help. Please bring them back.”

Responding to the message, she said that Indians will be brought back if the need arises and added that, “We are constantly monitoring the situation in Qatar”.

Swaraj, known for her prompt use of social media, had previously said that New Delhi was concerned about Indians in Qatar and the government was finding if Indians were stuck there and hoped the situation would improve soon.
