Thirteen insurgents have been killed in operations launched by Afghan forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said the ISAF's Regional Command-East in a press release on Wednesday.

"Afghan National Security and Coalition Forces killed 13 insurgents, discovered three weapons cache and found and safely cleared five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours," the release said.

Seven insurgents were killed in Heserak district, Nangarhar province. Six other insurgents had been killed in Tagab district, Kapisa province, it said.

The home-made IEDs were found and defused in Kapisa, Nangarhar, Khost, Paktika and Wardak provinces, the release noted.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments.

The Afghan security forces in partnership with the NATO-led coalition troops have intensified operations against Taliban and other militant groups recently. But the insurgent groups responded by bombings.

In addition, four Taliban militants were killed and one was wounded when the IEDs they were placing along two roads in eastern Laghman province detonated prematurely overnight, the provincial government said in a statement.

Four children were killed and one was wounded when a Taliban IED went off in southern Kandahar province on Tuesday.
