Consumer spending for Mother's Day 2019 could hit a new high in the United States, the National Retail Federation (NRF) said on Wednesday.

According to the survey released by the NRF, the world's largest retail trade association based in Washington, Mother's Day spending in the country this year is expected to reach 24.95 billion U.S. dollars, up from 23.14 billion dollars in 2018.

Mother's Day spending has been growing consistently over the past several years, and this year's spending is expected to be the highest in the 16-year history of our survey, said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the NRF.

The survey covered 7,321 U.S. adults over 18 years old. Even though the figure showed that the percentage of people celebrating Mother's Day was 2 percent lower than last year's 86 percent, those celebrating were expected to spend more.

According to the data, people who would celebrate are expected to spend 196.47 U.S. dollars this year on average, up from last year's 179.77 U.S. dollars. In addition, the survey showed that men were likely to spend more than women, and people aged 35 to 44 were likely to spend the most.

The survey also suggested that 44 percent of those celebrating would prioritize finding a gift that's unique or different, while greeting cards, flowers and special outings remained as the top three choices as Mother's Day gifts.

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of a family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. The NRF has been conducting its annual survey of this holiday since 2013 to see how Americans will celebrate mom on her special day each spring.
