The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation on Tuesday to provide economic assistance to Ukraine, sending the bill to President Barack Obama for final signature.

In an overwhelming vote, the House passed the bill that was approved by the Senate last week which included giving Ukraine 1 billion U.S. dollars of loan guarantees, and providing 150 million dollars in aid to Ukraine and surrounding countries.

The White House said in a statement later that the president welcomes today's congressional action, as this legislation will allow providing crucial support to Ukraine through loan guarantees that will facilitate access to needed financing to Ukraine as it takes essential steps to restore economic stability and return to growth and prosperity.

The president will continue to build support for the Ukrainian people at this critical time, and will also continue to urge Republicans in Congress to stop blocking important reforms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ensure the IMF has the resources it needs to fulfill its mission and expand the tools available for Ukraine and other countries, the statement added.
