Families of Hong Kong victims in Egypt's balloon blast heading home

The families of the nine victims from China's Hong Kong in Egypt's balloon blast a week ago flew home from Cairo on Monday after delegating local authorities to manage the transfer of the victims' bodies.

At Cairo's airport, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Song Aiguo, seeing the group off, expressed deep sympathy and condolence to the victims' families on behalf of the embassy staff.

He said the Egyptian government is speeding up the procedures for transporting the bodies and the Chinese side is actively coordinating with the Egyptian side so as to bring the victims' bodies back home as soon as possible.

Song also urged the Egyptian side to quicken the ongoing investigation into the accident and inform the Chinese side of its conclusion in a timely fashion.

Lee Kwong Wing, a senior official at Hong Kong Immigration Department in Cairo to manage the aftermath of the accident, pledged to do his utmost "to deal with the concerning insurance company, and local authority, and Chinese embassy to speed up the process."

The group of families arrived in Cairo on Wednesday and went to four local hospitals' morgues to identify the bodies the following day.

By Sunday, bodies of the nine victims from China's Hong Kong have all been identified, according to the Chinese embassy.

The families also held a memorial ceremony at the site of the balloon crash in Luxor for the nine, who were killed alongside 10 others in the deadly accident.
