Bangladesh's government slapped a nighttime curfew Sunday evening on the country's southeastern Rangamati district, some 293 km away of capital Dhaka, after violence spread to different parts of the hilly district following tribal clashes.

The curfew will remain in place till 8:00 a.m. local time Monday.

Shamsul Arefin, the district's administration chief, declared the curfew after violence between tribes and Bengali settlers spread to different parts of the hilly district. At least 10 people were injured in incidents of violence reported in parts of the city on Saturday.

The clash erupted as groups of ethnic students started demonstration, protesting against the inauguration of a public medical college in the district.
