U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday called for a restart of congressional dialogue on extending the country's COVID-19 aid, denouncing the executive orders taken by President Donald Trump as acts that would not directly impact Americans.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," Pelosi termed Trump's executive orders and memorandums as "illusions", saying it was still important to strike a deal between congressional Democrats and the White House.

"Right now, we need to come to agreement," Reuters quotes her to say.

"We could talk about how long our provisions would be in effect, so we can take things down — instead of the end of September of next year, a shorter period of time — and we'll revisit all next year anyway," Pelosi told Fox News.

In a separate interview with Fox News, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin also hinted at being open to a resumption of talks.

"Let's pass legislation on things that we agree on," said Mnuchin.

"We don't have to get everything done at once," he added. "What we should do is get things done for the American public now, come back for another bill afterwards."
