Square dancing has been added to the 13th National Games as an online event, Chinese media outlet The Paper reported.

More than 100 teams have uploaded their performance videos for the upcoming national square dancing competition, with the winner decided by a public vote. Those teams that qualify will then attend the finals in Tianjin.

Square dancing (also known as line dancing) is a popular sport in China, especially among elderly females.

Some 100 million people across the country are estimated to participate in the hobby, mostly due to the low cost and ease involved in taking it up. Elderly Chinese also use square dancing to keep fit and maintain social activity with friends.

The 13th National Games will be held in Tianjin from August 27 to September 8. It’s reported that about 7000 people from across the country will take part in a total of 126 competitions including badminton, table tennis, marathon and Tai Chi.
