JAKARTA, Jan. 23 (APD) – Major flood in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province has claimed 9 lives, displaced 3,321 ones as activities to evacuate people in the affected areas were still underway at present, a provincial government official said on Wednesday.
Head of South Sulawesi province Communication Bureau Devo Khadafi said that besides evacuating people from their rooftops due to the massive flood, search for 7 ones reported missing by their families was still underway at present, carried out by personnel from military, police, regional Red Cross and volunteers.
“Those who died were the ones drifted by the fierce stream of water during the flood,” Devo said in search command post set up in the province’s capital of Makassar.
According to Devo, the flood that ensued since Tuesday has submerged residents’ houses in 10 regencies in the province.
He added that thousand of houses in the affected areas were submerged by the flood which was generated by massive spillovers of water in rivers following heavy downpour since Monday.
Water from the flood rose up to 200 meter in the most affected areas, forcing residents to climb up to their rooftops, waiting to be saved, he added.
