Postgrad dies after alleged poisoning

A postgraduate student in Shanghai has died more than two weeks after he drank water that was allegedly poisoned by his roommate.

28-year-old Huang Yang died shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Zhongshan Hospital.

He was in his third year at Fudan University's medical school.

The alleged poisoning has shocked students at the medical school, as well as the public.

According to sources with the university, Huang began violently vomiting and developed a fever after drinking water in his dorm on April 1st.

He fell into a coma with liver failure after being sent to hospital.

SOUNDBITE(CHINESE) FANG MING, Spokesman of Fudan University:

"I know that there are more than two students living in one dormitory in the Medical College department. I think it's an especially unfortunate event."

On April 11, police found that the contents of a water dispenser in Huang's dormitory had been contaminated by a poisonous compound...

But police said the compound hasn't yet been identified.

Huang's roommate, surnamed Lin, has been identified as a suspect and is in police custody.

Further investigation is under way.
