APD | Sri Lanka’s new President appoints interim cabinet

COLOMBO, Nov. 22 (APD) – Sri Lanka’s new President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday appointed an interim cabinet to manage state affairs till Parliamentary elections scheduled next April.

The new Ministers were given multiple posts in the interim cabinet.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed as the Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Policy Development.

Other key portfolios included that of Minister of Foreign Relations, Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations which was given to Dinesh Gunawardene and Tourism which was given to Prasanna Ranatunga.

Speaking after handing over the appointments, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that a set of State Ministers will be appointed next week.

He said that the State Ministers must not just sign documents but instead must be given enough authority.

The President urged the newly appointed cabinet Ministers to give more responsibilities to the State Ministers to be appointed next week.

The President also said that heads of Government institutions will be appointed after being evaluated by a selection committee.

He urged the Ministers to appoint officials based on their capabilities and suitability to the respective posts.
