Former Greek transport minister Michalis Liapis was arrested on Tuesday in a southern coastal suburb of Athens for a series of traffic violations, including driving an uninsured car with counterfeit number plates, police said.

Liapis, scion of a political dynasty who served as transport minister, among other posts, in conservative governments in the period 2004-2007, was detained after ignoring a stop sign.

In a routine check that followed, traffic police discovered that he did not have his driving license and that his jeep had illegal registration plates and no insurance.

He is due to appear before a prosecutor later on Tuesday, facing a string of charges, including false certification.
