Casualties were feared after a suicide car bombing targeted a military convoy of the NATO-led troops in eastern Afghan capital of Kabul on Monday morning, police said.

"The powerful explosion occurred at around 6:30 a.m. (0200 GMT) in Pul-e-Charkhi road which is also called Jalalabad road in eastern Kabul. The bomber was killed on the spot after he detonated his car bomb close to the foreign troops military vehicles," a police official told Xinhua anonymously.

The Taliban insurgent group claimed the responsibility for the attack shortly after the blast. "There might be casualties on civilians and military personnel, but details will be revealed to public later on the day,"the source added.

The government troops immediately cordoned off the area shortly after the blast. Police work to keep people from gathering at the scene for fears that there might be a second blast.

The blast caused a plume of grey smoke to rise above the scene. Enditem
