Cristiano Ronaldo was paid a surprise visit by Spanish customs agents on his rented yacht. According to AFP, the tax authorities said that it was merely a “routine check.” The Portuguese captain is reportedly holidaying in the Balearic Islans with his girlfriend and family.

News of the inspection comes just three weeks before Ronaldo is slated to appear before a judge for an accusation of tax evasion to the tune of 14.7 million euros. AFP reports that a source in a Spain’s tax agency said that it was just part of a routine check of vessels. “We do this every summer in the Balearic Islands. It doesn’t affect those who use the boats, it’s related to charter companies’ registration taxes,” said the source according to AFP.

Spain’s Hola celebrity magazine published photos of three uniformed customs agents arriving on a motorised rubber dinghy before boarding the grey yacht where an awning was pulled down over the main part of the boat as they went about their inspection.

DailyMail had reported that the agents left after discovering everything on board Cristiano’s yacht, named as AYa London, was in order.

Ronaldo had reacted to the accusation of tax evasion made against him angrily. Reports emerged of the Real Madrid star planning to leave the club and move away from Spain thus leading to him being linked with a return to Manchester United, among other big money transfers.
