APD | Japanese carmakers resume operations in China’s coronavirus-hit Hubei province

Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said on March 13 that it has resumed vehicle manufacturing in Xiangyang in the central Chinese province of Hubei, which the epicentre of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, after a one-and-a-half month hiatus.

With the restart of the factory in Xiangyang, Nissan has now put all its production facilities back to work.

Nissan initially set to resume the operation of its plant to Xiangyang as early as February 24, but it was later forced to extend the shutdown as required by the Hubei authorities.

The Japanese carmaker halted operations at its factories in China in February following the coronavirus outbreak.

In addition to the Xiangyang plant, the other is in the city of Zhengzhou in Henan province.

Nissan's Japanese peers Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Toyota Motor Corp. have also restored their production in China, the world's largest auto market.

Earlier, Honda Motor Co. said that it had partially resumed four-wheel vehicle production in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province, after obtaining permission from local authorities.

With the resumption in Wuhan, Honda now has all of its production bases in China returning to work.

Honda said parts of three four-wheel vehicle plants in the city restarted operations on March 11. The plants have a combined output of 600,000 units a year.
