China on Friday upgraded its travel warning for its citizens visiting Syria, asking them to cancel their plans after the recent US-led military strikes.

An announcement on the website of the Chinese embassy in Syria read: "There were recently a series of suspected chemical attacks in Damascus, and the United States and other countries have threatened with a military strike. Terrorist attacks, kidnappings and armed robberies also took place in areas controlled by the Syrian government. The safety situation in Syria remains complex and dangerous."

The Chinese government urged its nationals who currently reside in Syria to tighten their security and emergency preparedness, also to stay away from military installations and crowds.

In November 2017, the Chinese government first issued a travel warning to Syria. The warning was issued again in January this year.
