A charity football match between two teams from Chengdu and Hong Kong was held on the evening of June 28 at the Fenghuangshan Sports Park Gymnasium in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province.

The match aims to celebrate the 30-day countdown to the 31st FISU Summer World University Games, which is to be held in Chengdu from July 28 to Aug 8.

The "Hong Kong Stars Football Team", composed of famous Hong Kong actors and singers such as Alan Tam and Felix Wong Yat-wa, played against the "Rongyao Football Team", led by Yao Xia and other Sichuan football celebrities, and drew 3-3.

Different from ordinary football matches, the match was intermingled with a singing competition. The famous hosts from Chengdu and Hong Kong acted as the "cheerleaders" of the two teams and led nearly 30,000 spectators to participate.

The players and spectators sang classic songs from singers and bands including Alan Tam, Liza Wang Ming-chun, Beyond and Zhao Lei, providing Chengdu citizens with a wonderful cross-cultural experience combining football and pop music.

Li Jinliang, deputy director of Chengdu Radio and Television Station, the organizer of the event, said the football match was held to welcome the World University Games and promote the exchanges and cooperation between Chengdu and Hong Kong.

Sports exchanges between Chengdu and Hong Kong have always been very close. In fact, sports events are the calling cards of both cities.

Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, the Hong Kong secretary for culture, sports and tourism, said that he hoped to promote cooperation and exchanges between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland through cultural activities, cultural exhibitions and sports events.

The high-speed train between Chengdu and Hong Kong is to start operation on July 1, and a single journey will take only ten hours, making the exchanges between the two cities more simple and convenient.
