UN Ebola envoy appointed as special adviser on sustainable development agenda

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Thursday announced the appointment of David Nabarro of the United Kingdom as special adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Nabarro has served as special envoy of the secretary-general on Ebola since September 2014, providing strategic and policy direction for the international response.

He also once served as head of World Health Organization's Department for Health Action in Crises.

UN Member states has adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September this year, outlining 17 goals with 169 specific targets which basically redefines how the world works together to end poverty, promote prosperity, and combat climate change.

"The Special Adviser will work with Member States and other relevant stakeholders to galvanise action on implementation of the Agenda," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson's office.

According to the office, Nabarro will also oversee the UN chief' s special initiatives such as Every Woman Every Child, a global movement that intensifies international action to address major health challenges facing women and children.
